seeking to "exclude it from the public square" (Jeynes, 2001, p. 31) and, thereby, relinquish younger generations from abiding by its moral teachings through the educational setting. Understanding the
underlying message put forth by the apparent shift away from religious affiliation where academic achievement is concerned is to realize the significant changes that have occurred in relation to religious
landscape over the past several decades. Understanding how the Church represents myriad different social and political aspects of society, one can readily understand the decreasing impact religion continues to
have in the modern scholastic environment by applying the rational choice theory that indicates how: "The elementary unit of social life is the individual human action. To explain
social institutions and social change is to show how they arise as the result of the action and interaction of individuals" (Elster, 1989, p. 13).
One of the most critical aspects of the shift in relation to the rational choice theory and the way in which it requires sectors of society to
