historical perspective, as a means of contextualizing some of our central dilemmas. It was Coontzs contention that relating factors that influence our social culture from a historical perspective provides
the foundations for concrete discussions of issues facing the American family. Specifically, Coontz related this as a part of a kind of healing process; contextualization is viewed as a
means of reducing the anxieties and recriminations that extend from the belief that family issues are singular, rather than situational. Coontz began by assessing the views of the parent/child relationship
and the concerns parents express about everything from oppositional behaviors and gang participation to teen suicide. Coontz placed these reflections in a historical context, maintaining that the parents from
the 1950s also believed their adolescents were threatened by similar ills, but maintained in both cases that these issues are often exaggerated. For example, Coontz took the issue of
teen suicide and put commonly cited statistics about increasing teen suicide rates into both historical and social contexts, showing that teens as a whole actually have a much lower rate
of suicide than most other demographic groups (Coontz 8). Some of the anxieties that go along with parenting extend from the fact that the expectations of adulthood are
becoming more challenging and parents are increasingly concerned that their adolescents are ill-prepared for becoming adults. While most parents have argued that their children are growing up too fast, it
was Coontzs contention that the length of childhood has actually increased, with more children depending on their parents into their early adulthood than at any other time in history.
