information on using this paper properly! Introduction Virtually everybody is willing to admit that Americans have never had to deal with anything as horrifying as the September 11,
2001, attacks on the Pentagon, the World Trade Center and an aborted mission to unknown destination that still murdered an entire jetliner full of people. C Mills Wright (2000) makes
the point that, at its best, sociology can offer a creative, imaginative and compassionate understanding of human differences. And while Americans struggle to understand the differences that exist between the
people of Afghanistan, the Taliban, and extremists claiming to be operating under the dictates of Islam, relatively little attention is being paid to the issues that are once again turning
"real" Americans against "those people." Just as Americans saw the crimes committed against Japanese Americans fifty years ago, we are again seeing crimes against the new millenniums "other" -- Arab
Americans or people who look like they may be Arab. One would hope that as a people, we had evolved further. The sad truth may suggest just the opposite.
It is also valuable to consider the perspective offered by Oliver Cromwell Cox who notes in Race Prejudice , Intolerance, and Nationalism that racial inequality is directly related to the
social and economic system that generates it. If such is the case, then it is important to establish and understand the specific frameworks that have served to determine the ways
