and conditions within family structures. And, in understanding such family structures they can gain an understanding of a society as a whole. Two very popular sociological theories are the functionalist
and the feminist theory. The following paper examines, separately, how the two theories are or can be applied to Australian families and whether such approaches can adequately describe or define
the Australian family. Australian Families and Functionalist Theory In the functionalist theory sociologists see the average or norm of the family as that which has a husband who
is also the father, and a wife who is also the mother, and then the children. "Anything other than this ideal is a deviation from the normalcy of values" (WebEssortment.com,
2004). In this theory this is the hub, the basic unit that socializes the children teaches them the fundamental issues of society. The people in such a family all have
their roles. However, "The precarious position of the family in modern society is seen as stemming from the fact that the familys share of these functions has been dwindling while
other institutions have taken on greater responsibility" (WebEssortment.com, 2004). From this very simple perspective we can perhaps immediately assume that the functionalist theory is not necessarily one that will
work in any given modern society such as found in Australia. However, on the other hand, it can be a basis for understanding the changes that are occurring and that
have occurred in Australia in the past few decades. This normal family is the family that all modern societies seem founded on to some degree, and while there is change,
this ideal normal family is still incredibly influential in how people view themselves and their society. As such it is likely that this approach would prove beneficial for studying families.
