show from a sociological perspective. Discussion The show lends itself to sociological analysis because of its main character, who is an openly gay man. At least, he is acknowledged by the producers to be gay, even if in the show he remains mostly closeted and is "out" only to his friends and a few of his colleagues whom he trusts. Still, having a gay character as the lead in a prime time show is new and a commendable step in the maturation of television. Unfortunately, at least according to one source, the show didnt go nearly far enough in developing the characters: "Images of queers on television and film tend to perpetuate the same stereotypes that are found in the larger culture. For example, NBCs Will and Grace ... represents gay life as little more than a series of stereotypes ... Will is the masculine "just-the-same-as-straight" gay man who cannot seem to find a lover, while Jack is the frivolous "flaming queen" gay man who has slept with everyone. Neither character ever steps far enough away from stereotype to reveal a realistic individual who just happens to be homosexual" (Gianoulis, 2004). Perhaps the most interest part of Gianouliss observation is her remark that the images on screen perpetuate those in the culture, which means that sociologically we are still not ready to look at gay men and lesbians as people first; instead, ``we become caught up in the idea of their sexuality as being the only thing that defines them, which is both untrue and unfair. Thus we are dealing with the sociological issue of stereotyping, a process we seem to be unable to forego. The other two main leads are women, Grace and Karen.
