social conditions, presents the reader with the journey to find oneself, and opens up many different possibilities in terms of searching for ones place in the world. During the time
period, the 18th century, there were many restraints placed on people from a social perspective. People were expected to behave a particular way and live their lives according to their
social position, the position they were born into. "Tom Jones" challenges some of these perspectives and demonstrates the inherent need to find identity in a constricting social structure. In the

Plot "Fieldings novel Tom Jones has been called one of the three greatest tales in the history of literature. It set the basic type for the plot of the novel
of self realization" (Rexroth rexroth.html). It is the story of Tom Jones, a single man who is on a journey to discover himself, something he achieves in many ways. As
Rexroth illustrates, "He finds out, in the course of a series of remarkable adventures, who he is. It is not just that he learns his true parentage and realizes his
potentialities; he discovers what he really is, himself for himself alone. . . his ego center, as our 20th-century headshrinkers put it" (rexroth.html). Tom begins his life in a

a somewhat troubled youth. In these regards we see a story whose plot certainly steps on the social toes of the time, as will be discussed in the next section.
