to Australias history. In any event, values seem to emanate from articles on both political and personal subjects. In an article printed in January of 2004, written by Rhett Watson,
it appears that values are somewhat average, but the degree of outrage expressed by society is low. Australians appear--and this is something that is supported by this article--rather flexible.
In an article entitled "A father in hiding with his teenage true love" a story is relayed that rivals any soap opera script. While in many nations, the marriage
of a teenager and a man in his twenties is acceptable, in much of western society it is frowned upon. In this tale, a married father runs off with a
thirteenth year old girl, but the interesting part of the story is that he had met his present wife at about the same age (Watson 4). It seems that the
practice is thought to be horrific and tragic, but not much is made of the criminal nature of the act. In other words, society gives lip service to the negative
nature of the act, but really does not take the legal part of it seriously. In other modern societies, such an activity might be associated with child abuse. A man
in the United States for example might be called a pedophile and arrested for kidnapping and statutory rape. In Australia, while the man is also viewed in a very negative
light, the events are at the same time looked upon as a mere unfortunate circumstance. In the article, the Superintendent of police does say that the department does take
