on fire after he refused to give up his wallet and house key ("Burnt boy" 28). The incident seemed to occur rather quickly as almost immediately after refusing to be
mugged, the boy was burned. Despite the horrific nature of the crime, things could have been much worse. Even though he was badly burned he was only hospitalized for a
short time and then released (28). After the incident, Georges mother was afraid to allow her other children to play outside (28). The event appears to have traumatized the entire
family; further, the boy had several nightmares after the incident (28). In fact, he had such a hard time coping with the event, he had to be sedated (28).
In some way, the incident is typical of hoodlum behavior and was in fact not too drastic considering in other nations, gang wars lead to gunshots and many deaths. At
the same time, there is something decidedly evil about the act. There is also a sense that the other teen who tried to mug the boy was in need of
cash and material items. He was likely of a lower socioeconomic class, although the article does not indicate much else about that. The reaction to the incident says much about
the people, but it also conveys a clearly human experience. One might expect a culture that is more entrenched in violence to retaliate instead of to retreat. Here, the family
and the victim were traumatized and stayed indoors in fear. In a dangerous American neighborhood in the Bronx or Compton for example, people would not retreat and try to avoid
the miscreant. Rather, most street wise Americans would retaliate through engaging friends and family to go after the individual who set their loved one on fire. Of course, here the
