behavior of five students in the context of Mertons concepts. First, Greg is an A student, is active in extracurricular activities and plans to attend business or law school in the future. Here, Greg is able to live up to societal expectations and this is shown in his ambition. It is likely that he has the means to achieve it or at least his background is conducive to such motivation. Mary is also active in school, but has good grades only in the subjects she feels are important. Mary also believes that letter grades are oppressive and argues with staff. To some extent, Mary is acting out. Anomie is present as there is a sense of normlessness. She does not conform as to Mary, there are expectations of her that she feels are impossible to fulfill. Mike on the other hand is a C+ student and hopes that he will be able to graduate on time. He has applied for several clerical positions and has said he will be happy just to get by. Clearly, Mike is either not living up to his potential or he is simply not ambitious. Either way, anomie is experienced. To Merton, along with the precepts of his social strain theory, one can say that the way in which the world is structured does not permit a C student to thrive. He has given up. There is a sense that whatever he does, it does not matter anyway. He is happy to get by not because getting by would actually make him happy, but because he feels as there is nothing else he can do.
