outlaws and steal and kill their way to prison, but others only marginally break the law. They might ignore drug laws or jay walking statutes or speeding signs. Some might
cheat on taxes or cheat on their spouses. These are things that are done routinely every day and people are not considered career criminals if they engage in these indiscretions.
Yet, some of the issues mentioned are much more serious than others. For example, it may be immoral to cheat on ones wife, but it is not immoral to cross
against the light. When it comes to gray areas, how do people push the envelope and feel good about themselves? To some degree, they detach. Berger (1963) writes:
"Detachment has been a method of resistance to social control at least since Lao-tzu and was made into a theory of resistance by the Stoics" (p.132). Certainly, one may see
the "rules" or social norms as a part of social control. In evaluating an article by Douthat (1996) about a tax collector who did not collect taxes, it is important
to keep this in mind. One would think that the tax collector ought to do his or her job. Yet, in this article that focuses on Wanda Stula, a tax
collector who worked for eighteen years, it is noted that she did not perform the tasks of her job correctly (Douthat, 1996). The article goes on to say that she
would forgive interest on property taxes when the elderly or poor could not pay (Douthat, 1996). Of course, this is illegal, but ethics and the law are not always in
concert. As far as Wanda was concerned, she was doing something good. Wanda Stula got into trouble when a tax payer complained when she did not get a break
