The story takes place in a jury room and as the movie develops the men demonstrate their characters as well as their positions in society to some extent. The story also revolves around stereotypes made regarding poor people and people of culture. The following paper provides a sociological analysis of the film "12 Angry Men." Sociological Analysis of "12 Angry Men" The film opens in a court room as the judge tells the jury that it is up to them to decide the fate of a young man, a young man accused of murdering his father. The jury is then dismissed and they go to the jury room where they begin to discuss the trial. At first they all seem to offer up their opinion of guilty, eager to get out and get the case over with. One character, however, says he is going with "not guilty." This causes all the men to become incredibly irate and disgruntled for they do not think there is any possible way someone could assume there was any doubt about the guilt of the young man/boy. This sets the stage for a sociological condition wherein the public, the individual people, simply assume what they are told is right and also the condition wherein they trust lawyers and never question things, in this case based on the assumed truth that all ethnic and impoverished people are guilty of something. As the story progresses one after another of the individuals in the jury room begins to change his mind as more and more discussion of evidence is discussed and analyzed. As their struggles continue their personalities and their cultures and their upbringing and their social status and attitudes about people and society begin to emerge as well.
