of life. In the media people are presented with the perfect image of how people should look, how involved parents should be, what kind of home and car people should
drive, and how people are seen as successful when they possess all the right "things." Both men and women are often made to feel they are inadequate if they do
not possess the right look, the right job, or the right material possessions. Not surprisingly, morals and ethics have little to do with the media today as people move further
and further into superficial needs and desires. Many television shows push this need for outer appearances, following the trend and also creating the trend. They influence society in many
different ways, pushing for "good looks" as a way to be successful and happy. In many cases these "good looks" are touted as the only way to be successful and
happy for ugly fat people cannot be successful or happy according to the media. In many ways it almost seems as though it is not enough to claim people should
look better, but that it is part of the plan to make sure people believe they are ugly so they follow the direction the media takes them, almost ensuring people
are lacking in confidence so they believe what the media offers them. The following paper examines one media television show, "Extreme Makeover," illustrating how it influences people and is one
