PRAGMATIC TRANSFER The use of pragmatics in linguistic situations refers to the relationship of sentences to the environment in which they actually occur. It is felt that in the same situation Vietnamese learners of English (VLE) use different types of request strategies from those of American native speakers of English. There are three main request speech acts in linguistic situations, as identified by H. Khosravi and Y. Wilks: the Request-action, Request-information and Request-permission (Pragmatics, 2002, PG). These strategy types are dependent upon the social environment and natural language of the user. The two main areas of natural language processing are felt to be in belief modeling, in which the mentality of the speaker is displayed, and the speech act itself that is described as "viewing dialogue in planning terms" in which "understanding an utterance involves deriving the complete plan a speaker is attempting to achieve" (Pragmatics, 2002, PG). The "appropriate use of language in social contexts" (Matsuda, 1999, PG) is more than just a language issue; it also becomes a social issue when the VLE uses an incorrect inflection that becomes a social or academic error. Matsuda postulates "studies do indicate that learning to select an appropriate expression takes more time because discrimination of social appropriateness is acquired much later than is the rote learning of formulaic expressions of request" (1999, PG). Textbooks are oftentimes not sufficient in the learning of English and it is for this reason that language learning becomes a more interpersonal type of study.
