using this paper properly! As long as the concept of civilization has existed, there has been a tension between the need to maintain social order and the actions of
some individuals which threaten that social order. This tension was the basis for the development of legal codes, commonly held "social contracts" by which the entity of the state reserved
the right to punish these individuals for their aberrant behavior in the name of preserving social order. Thusly, "criminals" were born. Ever since, the concept of crime has been tied
up in controversies concerning diverse aspects of the matter, such as the treatment of criminals and what constitutes a truly fair trial. One of the most important controversies, however, is
yet unresolved, and has to do with the causes of criminal behavior. What causes some individuals to act against the laws of a particular society, even knowing the punishment that
awaits them? There have been dozens of competing theories presented over the years. This paper will explore the sociobiological theories of criminology, in contrast to the biological and psychological theories.
This paragraph helps the student introduce sociobiological theory. The vast number of theories, for the most part, fall into one of three broad categories; these are biological, psychological, and sociobiological.
Each school offers a differing explanation for human behavior, and consequently, criminal behavior. Sociobiology as a formal theory first manifested in the 1970s with the thinker Edmund O. Wilson, primarily
as a reaction to a contest that had waged in psychology since the 1940s between biological theorists and sociocultural theorist (Siegel, 2009, p. 123). For years, prominent criminologists and psychologists
