many ways that could even be considered superior to European culture. Sometimes that organization and interrelationship even influenced European culture, and ultimately the United States itself, in quite dramatic
ways. The specifics of traditional Native American organization and interrelationships changed, of course, in accordance with the specific group of Native American being examined.
The Iroquois are among the first Native American groups to jump to mind when we consider their influence on the cultures of those European peoples that had invaded
their lands. While we often think of the Iroquois in terms of their influence on the American Constitution itself (an impact made possible by Benjamin Franklins recognition of the superiority
of some aspects of the Iroquois form of government) their influence was felt in other ways as well. One of the most controversial of these is the influence on
the feminist movement which would emerge in this young nation shortly after it achieved independence from British rule. The relationship Iroquois women had with their community would, in many
ways, come to be emulated by American women as they made their footholds in the new country that was emerging. Part of the
unique identity of the Iroquois was the manner in which women interacted in their governmental functions. This differences quickly came to European consciousness as there was more and more
