as expressed in the text are carried to their logical conclusion, this would mean the extinction of the human race. However, as Tolstoy himself points out in The Lesson of the Kreutzer Sonata, this is in fact not only the most rational development for the human race as a whole, but also the one which most befits a true reading of the meaning of Christianity, despite the conflict which it sets up. Tolstoy explains in considerable detail his views of the contemporary social climate as regards morality and sexuality, as expressed in the text. He asserts that there is too great a focus on the sexual aspect of human life, not merely in the sense of licentiousness and immorality, but with regard to marriage and parenting itself. His recommendation that men take equal responsibility for their sexual behaviour, rather than blaming women for being temptresses, is a reasonable one to make in terms of a society where sexual activity on the part of men is mostly tacitly condoned, whereas in women it is a matter for castigation and social ostracism. Similarly, his view that taking exercise for its own sake is simply playing at work is also a reasonable contention: there is, as he says, enough productive physical work available within a community to make visits to the gymnasium unnecessary if one wants to become fit and healthy.
