society, they do speak of the expectations of class in her society. Her focus was on the wealthy and middle class people, people who were expected to live according to
particular social rules in relationship to many things, most notable marriage in the works of Austen. With that in mind the following paper first examines the society presented in Austens
novel Sense and Sensibility. The paper then discusses the roles and position of women in that society. Society One of the first things one will note about the
society of Austens novel involves the structure of family. In the beginning of the novel Mr. Dashwood has died and this leaves his wife and daughters with nothing, aside from
whatever the inheritor may want to give them. His wife is his second, and there are three daughters. The money that Dashwood possessed has gone to the son of his
first wife. Putting aside the issue of gender, or the role and position of women in society, this illustrates that the way in which money was generally handled was that
which involved a patriarchal society. At the same time there are characters in the story, female characters, who possess money and it is the men who seek them out.
For example, one man, Willoughby, has presumably spent his money foolishly and is now seeking the affections of a wealthy woman to keep him in his accustomed social status.
Another character who engages in the same sort of behavior is Lucy. Lucy is a woman who desires to marry into money and is essentially one of those women who
