The inequality which exists between men and women in the United States entails a number of societal concerns. Women have, in fact, been kept in subservient positions to men
throughout history. Even in our modern world this subservience continues. Even when women move out of their traditional roles to take places beside men in the workplace they
have almost always been kept in lesser paying positions and, even when they managed to work their way into better positions, were not reimbursed the same as men in similar
positions. Theoretically, the rationale behind womens inequality in the modern world dates back to mankinds very first days on earth. Women quickly gained the prestige of being the
"weaker" sex. Males of ancient cultures came to be considered superior while females were considered inferior. Regardless of womens contributions
to mankind as a whole, they are still considered in many cases to be inferior. They are relegated certain societal roles and often these roles are chosen by men,
not by women. Women are often granted less status than are men in numerous aspects of our modern lives. This leads to a number of societal dysfunctions such
as unequal access to education, jobs and other societal positions. A number of societal measures have been enacted to address this discrepancy. Albeda and Tilly (1997) review some
of the legislative remedies which have been put in place to combat inequality. One of the most important of these is Affirmative Action which has been in place since
the 1960s. Affirmative Action is not a single idea or tool, instead it is a multitude of ideas and tools used to increase the presence and condition of minorities
