once great and in some cases spanned the globe no longer exist. The Roman Empire was feared throughout the known world of its day, and yet now only traces of
it remain. Why do civilizations attain great heights and then vanish? This paper will attempt to answer that question by examining another great vanished civilization, that of the Maya. Discussion
The Maya would be very distressed to hear that theyve vanished; according to the British Museum, there are more than eight million Maya living today in "southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala,
Honduras and El Salvador with 31 different Maya languages" (The Maya today, 2005). They are a proud people and have struggled to retain their culture by resisting attempts by various
governments to eliminate their culture, history and at times their very lives (The Maya today, 2005). In order to survive, many Maya communities "isolated themselves," which may be part of
the reason why their numbers appear to be under-reported. The Maya have resisted many outside pressures to adapt, including that of the Christian church as well as the Mexican Army,
which they held off from 1847 to 1901, and which they continued to resist into the 1940s (The Maya today, 2005). Like many other indigenous populations worldwide, the Maya are
