an impact even on the way we think of ourselves and our role within our respective societies. Concepts such as self esteem and even individualism are all affected by
the socialization processes that we undergo as children. So too are concepts such as individualism. Even the games that we play as children in traditional societies preparing us
for our adult roles in our society (Woenne, 1972; Morton, 1996). There are very definite differences in culture, however, in regard to individualism verses collectivism, in the degree to which
individual autonomy is considered in a positive verses a negative light. Our respective cultures, of course, play a critical role in
the type of childhood socialization that we have and ultimately in the kind of adult we become. In Western culture we sometimes emphasize the importance of individuality regardless of
the costs in fact. We make decisions on the basis of what is good for us as opposed to what is good for society as a whole. In
many traditional non-Western societies the socialization that a child receives is very much alike and it is dramatically different that that received in Western culture. Consider, for example, the
games played by rural Indian children and compare them to the games played by rural aborigine children. These games are more similar than they are dissimilar. They in
fact serve the same purpose. They are preparing children for their roles as adults. Consequently, girls primarily play games revolving around the ideas of housekeeping and childrearing while
boys play at games that prepare them for their roles as the superior gender. While they sometimes play together they largely play apart. Each gender is learning important
