Essentially, intentional socialization is what parents do with their children every day when they impart lessons about social graces, methods for communication and expectations about individual behaviors. Unintentional socialization,
though sometimes more influential in defining a persons path in life, are those lessons that are imparted without a purposeful act, when a child experiences or observes behaviors and then
either models or rejects them (Berns, 2010). Intentional socialization occurs in relation to the way in which parents present expectations for behaviors and consequences for non-compliance. If a
parent, for example, tells a child that it is good manners to refrain from using curse words, even when other children use them, this is a clear directive for compliance
with this value. When the child uses a curse word, then, the expected outcome should be a negative repercussion applied by the parent in order to ensure future conformity
with expected behaviors. Similarly, a parent can repeated present a family statement about expectations regarding premarital sex from a very early age. A child can grow up believing
that this kind of behavior is wrong. As an adolescent, the child may apply this value to his or her decision-making regarding sexual behaviors. Applying the standard of
abstinence, then, may be based on the childs belief that he will disappoint his parents if he goes against the family values. In a more positive manner, parents
may identify higher education as an important value and instill the pursuit of higher education in their children from a very early age. The expectation that a child will
go on to college and the repeated presentation of this value can socialize the child to pursue avenues for higher education as a natural progression of what he should do
