and client, very similar to the therapeutic alliance which is forged between a counselor or therapist and the client. As Garfield (2004) notes, there are certain elements which should be
present in this alliance which clarify the roles and the relationship of the participants. These elements would include trust and mutual regard as well as agreement on the nature and
outcome of tasks and goals. Howgego et al (2003) point out that client empowerment is an important factor in the partnership
between therapist and client: much the same can be said for the interaction between social worker and client, since the latter is to be supported in the process of understanding
and achieving their own goals. The dynamic balance of this relationship between the participants is to a great extent dependent on the listening skills of the social worker: it is
notable that such skills encompass rather more than simple, passive listening. Nelson-Jones (2005) comments that listening is not
a matter of merely remaining silent whilst the client talks: it is an active process in which the client is made aware of the social workers interest in and commitment
to their personal narrative, and which allows opportunities for input from the social worker - not necessarily verbal - which clarifies, reinforces or structures what the client is conveying.
Pickering (1986) notes that the listener does not project their own ideas and feelings on to the other
