theory and practice of social work has undergone in the past two decades or so, it is probably useful to look at social work skills particularly in the light of
these changing perspectives and the way that they have impacted on current practice. For example, it is acknowledged that social work practices are developed not only from sociological theory, but
also from the various theories of psychological development and behaviour which have been established over the years, and that these have been synthesised with pragmatic experience in order to formulate
current ideas of good practice. It is also important to note that social work, especially when regarded in terms of client empowerment and autonomy, cannot be assessed in isolation from
other societal institutions and practices. Amnon (2003), for instance, looks
at the importance of postmodernist thought with regard to the way in which social work is developing in the present day, and the differences between current methodologies and those of
previous eras. There is a movement away from the idea that there is one universal definition of truth and towards the concept that a multitude of different perspectives must be
taken into account. This is itself mediates against the dogmatic and prescriptive approach to social work and towards a theoretical environment which is less constrained: Amnon also makes the point
that strict objectivity is coming to be seen as having less validity than the subjective viewpoint, which in itself is in line with the move towards multiple perspectives. Instead of
the previous emphases on causality and linear modes of thinking, the stress is now on narrative, and on personal stories, which in itself stresses subjectivity. New meanings and realities are
