populace as a whole. However, different perspectives on social justice disagree as to the way in which these principles should be enacted: how, for instance, do we distribute resources impartially?
What constitutes an equal opportunity? Social justice is generally closely related to economic substructures: the redistribution of wealth, through taxation and welfare benefits,
is often seen as significant. The concept of social justice appears in a wide range of political, theological and philosophical structures: it is, for example, one of the central tenets
of the Green Party. It is frequently argued that capitalism, at least in its current form, is incompatible with social justice. Barry (2005),
for example, states that once the limits of production have been reached, then one persons gain will invariably be balanced by anothers loss, since our resources are finite. If it
is impossible to provide equal shares for all, then greed and self-interest become major driving forces: everyone wishes to acquire sufficient resources for their own comfort and well-being, even if
that means reducing the comfort and well-being of others. Adam Smiths argument, that a free market with minimal intervention will eventually reach its own level and benefit all, cannot effectively
be applied once we have overstepped the limits of production. We therefore have to consider whether capitalism should be reformed, in order
to support social justice, or whether this would merely be patching over the cracks: that is, do we need an entirely new social order to replace the inherent injustice of
