mental health issue. In an article written by April Wilkerson (2010) the subject of hoarding is addressed and tied to a mental health concern. It is explained that many people
who hoard items often have underlying mental health disorders (Wilkerson, 2010). Hoarding The topic and major themes of an article by April Wilkerson (2010) are attached to
the issue of hoarding and how it is related to mental health. In the article, Wilkerson (2010) interviews Dr. Murali Krishna who explains that social isolation usually accompanies hoarding and
so the afflicted do not usually seek help on their own. Hoarding is a part of mental health difficulties, but it is not a disorder in and of itself. Rather,
it is a symptom. Wilkerson (2010) explains information relayed by Dr. Krishna: "Hoarding, technically, isnt designated as a mental illness at all. It is a symptom in 30 to 50
percent of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and in 10 percent of those patients, its the primary symptom..." Interestingly, while a symptom of a larger disorder, research has revealed that a
problem in the fourteenth chromosome may be the culprit (Wilkerson, 2010). Therapist Lanette Long believes that hoarding is also tied to psychological trauma and for example, children who have been
neglected begin to hoard food (Wilkerson, 2010). Indeed, it could start out as a natural response to circumstances but end up becoming an extreme form of behavior. The article goes
