In analysing screenplays in terms
of the way that the text presents a specific construct of reality, it is necessary to consider the social and cultural influences which have had an impact on the text,
not only in the way that the dialogue itself is constructed but also in the way that the screenplay gives the audience an insight into the particular agenda of writer.
It is evident that the screenplay itself will also be enhanced and emphasised by other aspects of the production: in the case of film, this would include direction, lighting, music,
the inclusion of special effects and of course the way in which the actors themselves interpret the screenplay.
Consequently, in comparing British screenwriting to that of the USA, it is relevant to consider
the various social and cultural differences between the two countries and the way that these are evidenced in particular screenplays. It is significant, for example, that the Hollywood industry and
the constraints which the box-office places upon both screenwriters and directors is a major influence on American film, whereas this is not so much the case with the smaller British
industry.
