time. People have always been afraid of what they do not understand and that quite often relates to different cultures, genders, and peoples. However, we as a nation, have struggled, more often than not, to find the path to the fair and righteous treatment of all people. This does not mean that we live in a world where all are treated equally, but it does men that throughout our history we have gradually come closer and closer to a society that DOES treat everyone equally. In the following paper we examine some of American history, from 1870 to 1970, illustrating some of the struggles for equality and illustrating that while we may still have a long way to go, the progress has been positive in searching for equality for all. The Struggle for Equality 1870 is a significant year for it was a year that closely followed on the tales of the Civil War. It was a year that began many struggles, social and political, for the rights of many. Women, Native Americans, and perhaps especially African Americans, worked towards seeing the future that the end of the war seemed to promise. In 1870 we saw the implementing of the 15th Amendment "which provided the right to vote to all citizens, regardless of race. This promising start soon faltered during the tensions of Reconstruction (1865-1877) when federal armies occupied the South and enforced order" (Anonymous We Shall Overcome: Introduction, 2002; intro.htm). This was a period of time that offered a true civil rights movement, not only for African Americans, but for all different races and cultures. It was focused, of course, on the African American.
