which to see what the company is, and is not, doing. These have a limited value as they are a snap shot of the performance of the company at a
single point on time, and by the time we the public can gain access to the accounts then we can argue they are already old. The reports may give a
range of information about the company, from the from performance, to the influencing factors the company feels and the plans and practices the company has. For some companies the annual
report is used as an opportunity to increase transparency, however, these are a minority of companies. It has been argued that the annual accounts and the accounting framework should be
enhanced to make organisations more socially and environmentally transparent. The student may wish to add in definitions of social and environmental accounting.
The information that can be obtained from the financial reports is wide ranging, and much of what should is contained within the accounts has been laid down by the use
of statutory instruments such as the Companies Acts as well as regulations laid down by the relevant stock exchanges if they are traded in a stock market (Elliot and Elliott
1998). The information that can be gained from the annual report may also be seen as limited in terms of scope, the financial requirements are laid down, even with set
