when there have been concerns regarding travel the market has grown and is expected to continue growing (Meridith, 2005). In 1950 there were 25 million international tourists, by 2001 this
had reached 693 million (Frangialli, 2002). The level of growth in terms of revenue, excluding the cost of airline tickets and domestic tourism have been growing by the equivalent of
11% per annum and reached US $462 billion in 2001 (Frangialli, 2002). This makes tourism one of the largest international trade industries
(Frangialli, 2002). There have been many social and cultural influences which have impacted on the way the growth has taken place, changing the types of destinations, the mode oft travel
and frequency and the way travel decisions are made. In Europe we can look at the tourism industry and argue these are all easily apparent. The social and
cultural attitudes have changed over time. We can argue that general trends have seen in increased use of travel abroad. That there is now a greater demand for more from
a holiday than before with increasing needs for holidays which are more than sun sea and sand, and more is being demand, such as historical places of interest and complimentary
goods and services. This rise of the holiday abroad in Europe may have seen its initial growth with the development of package holidays and charter flights, but the current
status of travel is changing, there is greater empowerment of tourists and more independent travel both to distensions and whilst at destinations is supported by social and cultural attitudes.
