community organizations and agencies. For instance, social workers engage in community practices as soon as they make referrals to a community agency or advocate for clients. Community practice in and
of itself requires social workers to apply their knowledge and skills to change the patterns of behaviors in specific organizations, groups or institutions. Hardcastle, Powers and Wenocur (2004) refer to
this as macro-practice because the work is about changing something in an organization or group instead of in an individual. Community practice requires certain skills. These include those skills associated
with planned social change, community development, community organization, administration and social action (Hardcastle, Powers and Wenocur, 2004). This social worker even needs to have a degree of marketing skills in
order to promote planned changes and to gain acceptance and support for those changes. Social workers need many different skills to be effective. The most basic skill is the
ability to counsel individuals and even groups. They need to be able to establish and build relationships with diverse individuals, they need to be able to solve problems and make
decisions efficiently, they need knowledge about laws, and they need interviewing skills (Zastrow, 2010). Bartle (2010) wrote that the tasks of a social workers include administration, counseling, intervention, and advocacy.
Tasks also include problem solving, decision making, planning change, organizing, building collaborative relationships, community development. and negotiating. This is a truly diverse professional field. The community social worker will
need to coordinate services with other agencies. This will include private or NGO agencies and groups as well as other governmental groups. Examples could include the local Lions Club or
the Kiwanis Club, municipal governments, welfare organizations, and even other social action groups (Ambrosino et al., 2008). Some Social Work Theories Every social worker, regardless of work setting will
