is incredibly uplifting and enlightening in relationship to character development and a story that offers the viewer many emotional, psychological, social, cultural, and gender issues. The following paper examines the film and discusses elements in the film that relate to social work. Social Work and The Color Purple One element that the viewer can see in this film is the relational patterns. All of the characters seem to be stuck in a pattern, put in place by perhaps their parents, or struggling on a completely different path than their parents. For example, the character of Celie is a young woman who is very undereducated and she essentially does not truly comprehend, in the beginning, that much of what was done to her is wrong. She knows life could be better, especially when she meets Shug, but it takes her the entire novel to break free from the relational patterns. One good example is when Harpo complains about the fact that his wife will not listen. Celie tells him maybe he should just hit her. This is because that is what Celie has always known and she does not really comprehend the power and intelligence and strength of Sofia, Harpos wife. Sofia gets hit and approaches Celie about her supposed advice and is incredibly confused and upset by Celies advice. While Celie is sorry she is not in a position in her life, yet, where she understands why her advice was wrong because this is the pattern she knew, the pattern she felt was true. In the same vein however one sees how Sofia was raised in an environment where women were encouraged, if not expected, to be strong and independent and proud. Sofia had not grown up in a home where a woman would be beat ...
