a result of immigration, rapid urbanization, and industrialization. This organization modeled itself after the English model, which was typical during that era as more and more charities began to
emerge in response to the increased needs of the people in communities throughout the United States. Founded in 1877, the Charity
Organization Society was desperately needed as more and more Americans found themselves out of work and poverty stricken (The Charity Organization Societies, 2004). The COS organized as number of
significant activities that served to help integrate immigrants into American society, thus helping them from a social standpoint as well as making them more marketable in the marketplace (The
Charity Organization Societies, 2004). The fundamental idea behind COS was that poverty was a significant threat to the moral fiber of America, since it eroded even the most staunch
beliefs when faced with poverty and lack of basic necessities (The Charity Organization Societies, 2004). Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the COS was their belief that they needed
to help poor people help themselves, instead of merely providing handouts that would not fundamentally change the reality of the poverty stricken (The Charity Organization Societies, 2004).
The Charity Organization Society quickly became a model by which many other charitable organizations were modeled and developed (The Charity Organization Societies, 2004).
They were able to coordinate charitable resources under one roof, which was an important step toward progress and the success of the organization in making a real difference in peoples
