that was provided for Clunis, a paranoid schizophrenic. Though Clunis had shown signs of paranoid schizophrenia for almost a decade and was diagnosed with the condition in 1986, his
care in variety of psychiatric hospitals and his discharge appear to suggest a lack of concern for his basic rights, his well-being and the well-being of others. The
failures in the system of care provided for Clunis may have gone unnoticed if Clunis had not committed a criminal act after his release from care at Guys Hospital.
Clunis stabbed and killed Jonathan Zito in what was deemed an unprovoked attack, and was arrested following the attack. Though questions were raised about his care prior to the
attack, subsequent issues regarding the ethics of care and oppression, based both on his mental health status and his race, have been related in reports surrounding the incident, including the
Report of the Inquiry into the Care and Treatment of Christopher Clunis. In understanding the issues that have been raised and the importance for social workers, then, it is
valuable to consider the issue of human rights, the basic human rights assured to all, and the implications for criminal justice, social work and related fields. The Concept of
