the subtle variations within the aristocracy (Rigby 46). The food that the harvest workers took in was related to demographic fluctuations as well as social pressures and institutional restraints (46).
Types of food eaten was somewhat indicative of social status and to an extent, the same is true today. There have, throughout history, always been foods prohibitively expensive for
the middle and poorer classes. In addition to status by class, gender as it has been throughout the centuries was an issue then too. One study of medieval women involved
fourteen case histories of medieval London widows that was edited by Caroline Barron and Anne Sutton (Rigby 46). Widows who were taken from the restrictions of the status of femmes
couvertes and legal subordination in respect to their husbands were probably the most visible of all medieval females (46). Their roles as wives, widows, sisters and matriarchs revealed
that, although medieval women have often been defined more by their roles in society in relation to others, still had active historical roles in their own right (46). There
were class differences within the study group as well. Poor widows as well as widows of wealthy London merchants were assessed along with aristocratic widows (46). Some of the widows
studied continued to work in their deceased husbands businesses (46). It is interesting to note that each handled life different and much was contingent on social class. However, social
mobility often did change for the women after they lost their husbands. It has been pointed out that marital strategies and social mobility were important in the authors analyses.
