who argue that it an unnecessary social construction due to inequities in political policies and other actions. These arguments will be systematically compared before addressing the question of whether or
not the complexity of social stratification in the US should be addressed. It can be easily argued that stratification is a factor that is applicable to any societal structure
at any point in human history, as societies all develop positions that are inherent to their efficient functioning and then must induce members of that society to perform these functions
to the best of their abilities (Davis and Moore 14). Some of these positions are more appealing than others, some require special talents or training, and some are considered more
significant to the society as a whole than others. Rewards are offered as inducements and these rewards, plus their distribution, become inherent in the social order, evolving into that societys
social stratification (Davis and Moore 15). Social inequality evolves from the steps that societies take to insure that the appropriate, most highly qualified people fill the most essential positions,
which are the positions that have the greatest prestige and receive the greatest level of esteem (Davis and Moore 15). If a position is important, but difficult to fill, the
rewards of the position must be sufficiently high that this induces people to fill this position despite its complexity. This view of stratification, which portrays it as a functional necessity,
tends to portray inequalities inherent to stratification as evolving due to the differences in the "natural talents" of individuals (Fischer, et al 19). However, if this position is true, it
does not explain why countries, which are similar in regards to genetic stock and economic markets, vary considerably in the degree of social inequality that these societies demonstrate (Fischer, et
