security needs, self-importance and status needs, courtship needs, emotional support needs, needs for belonging to a community. Social rituals are important to the socialization process, as well as, the
development and integration of ego. As an end in itself, however, social rituals become a spiritual cul-de-sac where consciousness conforms and narrows to the reality tunnels of local consensus
maps, dogmas, and status criteria" (Alli, 2003). Blochs interpretation of the importance of ritual is the manner by which it upholds its
character and importance in a given society when that culture is under siege of political change. Bloch further asserted that maintaining ritual existence in the face of such tremendous
adversity as political transformation can also indicate the growth of tradition as a legitimizing impact upon said change (McGee et al, 2004). By
comparison, Turner equates symbolic anthropology as the antithesis to materialistic anthropology, in that it defies society to holistically exist based upon the tenets of individual desire. That materialism is
