Social responsibility can be defined in a variety of ways. From the perspective of global organizations social responsibility extends much further than
it might for an organization with a smaller realm of impact. World corporations today face numerous social issues. Everyone from the tobacco industry, to the automobile industry, to
gun manufacturers to pharmaceutical companies are faced with the question of just what their liability is in regard to the use of their products, for example. Equally important, of
course, is how the corporation impacts society in other ways such as how they impact the environment, the economy, and people themselves (Bendell and Veuthey, 2007). The socially responsible
organization behaves ethically and responsibly in each of these areas and they do so largely as a result of effective leadership.
II. Separating Personal Ethics from Social Responsibility Social responsibility is directly tied to the welfare of communities and even the world as a
whole. Personal ethics, in contrast, revolve in a more limited sphere. Sometimes, in fact, personal ethics might conflict with socially responsible actions on a global scale. Consider,
for example, the ethical commitment of an individual to a cause such as environmental protection. That commitment, as admirable as it is, might be in direct conflict with the
need to develop certain areas for the purpose of improving human health and welfare. III. Defining Corporate Citizenship Corporate citizenship entails corporations
