proper social order. We have a perception of that time as one when social graces far more sophisticated than todays casual attitudes and in fact we often perceive that
time to be one where social relations were elevated in status to one of exceptional importance. It is interesting then to try and articulate why these perceptions exist.
Perhaps is it from old movies or distorted version of history books. Perhaps there are few accurate depictions of the social order of that era because they were in
fact not very flattering. In truth the 19th century social scene was fraught with discontent. Not only were there serious
racial issues but there were significant gender issues as well, and these seriously impacted the nature of many social relationships of that era. It is therefore insightful to review
first-hand accounts of that era and to understand the true nature of how these social structures were formed and upon what ground they were based. Community and Social

century - this from a man who actually lived it. In fact, his account puts to rest any romantic notions one might harbor about such relationships, as he readily
