Like every other country in the world, Brazil has experienced its share of social protests. People protest conditions or situations they consider
unjust. In Brazil protests have been launched against everything from unfair working conditions to environmental destruction. Two of the more interesting social protests that have occurred in Brazil
in recent times, however, have been those against abortion and homelessness. These are, of course, two very different issues. They are issues, however, that have impacted people enough
that they are willing to stand up and protest the wrongs they represent. When we consider social protests they almost always have the
common denominator of heightened emotions. Such is certainly the case in the antiabortion protests that have occurred in Brazil. Interestingly, when these protests first began to gain headway
abortions were only legal in Brazil under very specific circumstances. For an abortion to be legal in the country the pregnancy must have either resulted from rape or it
must present a health risk to the mother (Catholic Insight, 2007). The catalyst for protest, however, wasnt the existing requirements for the legality of abortion but rather the move
that was making headway in Brazils National Congress to loosen the conditions under which a woman could seek an abortion.
