causes of social phobia, and the possible treatments for the disorder. INTRODUCTION Social phobia has not long been recognized as a separate and distinct anxiety disorder. Only in the
1980s did psychiatrists begin to treat patients solely for social phobia. Significant symptoms generally are displayed in the early teens through the late twenties and the disorder affects more
women than men, however, more men seek active treatment. Many individuals who display the symptoms of social phobia also have symptoms of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, alcohol and or drug abuse
and agoraphobia. Genetics, nurturing and cultural morays may affect the development of social phobia. The disorder can be most effectively treated through a combination of psychotherapy and
