that view to the populace. 1984 draws many themes, ideas, and devices from socialist countries around the world. Stalins Russia is often compared to the world of Oceania and 1984
often times in how the government controls and oppresses its people. Surveillance, the use of propaganda, and the belief in a Government free of any faults can be seen in
both 1984 and in Socialist era Russia. Winston Smith is the protagonist of Orwells novel and it is through him that the reader is exposed to 1984 and life in
a society ran by Big Brother. A miserable man, Smith feels an intense deep seated hatred to The Party and Big Brother. This hatred is a crime punishable by the
all-knowing, all seeing Thought Police. While working for the Ministry of Truth rewriting history to favor that of Oceania, Smith falls in love with a woman named Julia. Together they
start a clandestine relationship of forbidden love and dreams of a world without the presence of Big Brother. Their time spent together is cut short when OBrien, a coworker of
Smiths betrays the two and reveals that he is working with the Ministry of Truth. Winston and Julia are then tortured and reeducated and in the end Smith comes to
love Big Brother. The world of 1984 is one of constant war lacking hope and freedom. The three world powers, Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia are at constant odds, a fact
that Oceania exploits in effort to keep the populace under control. It is for this reason that the Party is capable of subjugating the people and the means to do
