(Social norms). In 1906, William Graham Sumner published a book called Folkways in which he described social norms. Using a Sumners brief description, well consider what it is like to
violate a social norm. Discussion According to Sumner, norms can be classified into three types: folkways, mores and laws (Social norms). Folkways are "relatively weak norms which are only mildly
enforced in a society"; they are "not against the law" (Social norms). Examples of folkways include "correct manners, appropriate dress and proper eating behavior" (Social norms). Mores are "the
strong and important norms of a society"; those who violate social mores will often incur severe punishment because much of the time, breaking these norms is against the law (Social
norms). Examples of mores include prohibitions against bigamy, cannibalism and incest (Social norms). Laws, according to Sumner, are norms that are "designed, maintained and enforced by the political authority
of a society" (Social norms). Examples of laws include the prohibition of speeding, the illegality of murder, and the necessity for paying income tax (Social norms). With these examples before
us, its easy to understand that when we go to a party, and consider violating some of the "rules" in force there, we are dealing with folkways. What are the
laws governing behavior at a party? That depends on the type of party it is. If its a frat party, structural damage can result; if its a birthday or anniversary
party, its assumed the attendees behavior will be relatively circumspect. The same goes for a dinner party; people assume that they are going to get together to have a few
