Many are shocked and dismayed as to the extent of the governments reach, but some are grateful that the government is in fact protecting its own. To that end, a student asks whether or not the U.S. government should invade or monitor social networking sites like Facebook in order to prevent cyber terrorism or Internet crimes. It is true that sometimes Facebook is used for political purposes. In Egypt for example, numerous members have posted political statements (Glatter, 2009). Interestingly, in recent times, Twitter actually helped the U.S. government when it was understood that people in Iran were sending important messages to citizens of the world. Without Twitter, much pertinent and timely information would be lost. Yet, the fact that there may be some information on the internet that is dangerous or helpful, or indicative of future action, should not mean that the government should be given carte blanche to intervene in the private affairs of its citizens. II. Social Networking Social networking sites are very familiar to most people. My Space and Facebook are two very popular web sites. Many people use Facebook for example, something that started as a way to connect college students with one another as they pursued their degrees and their social lives, but it mushroomed into a phenomenon that has captured the interest of many people. Ordinary folk have Facebook pages and post personal pictures to share with friends and family members.
