and political activism. Characteristics of Social Movements There were numerous significant social movements during the twentieth century, but the most famous is the Civil Rights Movement, which resulted in
gaining rights for African Americans and succeeded in dismantling the legal structure in the US that supported segregation and supported the societal status quo of social inequity that characterized American
culture until the landmark legislation of the earlier 1960s. As this suggests, social movements are always associated with societal reform in some fashion. As Stewart, Smith and Denton (2001) point
out, social movements, as opposed to trends or fads, are always organized and have definitive leaders. If it is impossible to identify leaders, as well as any specific coalitions or
organizations, the social phenomenon being investigated is a "trend, fad, or unorganized protest, not a social movement" (Stewart, Smith and Denton, 2001, p. 2). For example, Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. is the most noted leader of the Civil Rights Movement. Another universal feature of social movements is that they have a specific societal goal, which is typically to bring
