Social networking sites such as Facebook and the blogosphere as a whole represent the next evolution in interconnectedness; if Web 1.0 was about interconnection of server points through the exchange of data requests (through search engines or links), then Web 2.0 is all about bringing that connection directly into real life. This is where marketing comes in. When a company effectively makes use of social media, the company is essentially generating free customer awareness. This is usually not by subverting traditional advertising techniques and offering some kind of expertise or entertainment value for free. For example, someone interested in carpentry might look for carpentry information online, find a blog written by someone with expertise in the field of carpentry, become a loyal reader of that blog, and by extension, a loyal customer of the company affiliated with that blog (in this case, lets say, a carpentry supply company). I am affiliated with a small business known as Thoreau Instructional Schools ("Thoreau" for short), which sells instructive courses in building log cabins for personal dwellings or for profit. This being a niche area of business, obviously the marketing budget is quite low. It is difficult, as one might well imagine, to convince an indifferent individual that he or she would profit from learning how to build a log cabin. Effective marketing of our services, then, lies in communicating directly with individuals who already know they want to build log cabins, and would be interested in pursuing some avenue through which they might learn more information about how to do so.
