thing that matters to them a great deal of the time is getting the substance to which they are addicted. They become irresponsible and undependable. You can never believe an
addict will do what they say they will do and you cannot depend on them to perform their normal responsibilities (Maheu, 2008). They become in covert behaviors insofar as they
attempt to hide their addiction from others. They become very clever and very sneaky and are often successful for a long time. Addicts will hide whatever they are addicted
to. They are trying to keep their addiction a secret from everyone. They will find the most unique places to hide their alcohol or drugs. If they use needles, they
will try to hide the marks under clothing (Maheu, 2008). Some addicts may even feel guilt during their more sober times. It does not last, though, because the need
to fill their dependency is a much stronger motivation. There are also addicts who live a relatively normal life (Pietras, 2008). They may do so for years before it catches
up with them. They will become compulsive and obsessive about getting their drug or drink. Classical conditioning theory would explain these behaviors in terms of stimulus - response. In
classical conditioning, the individual is rewarded for certain behaviors and punished for others. Consider the compulsion to fill the dependency need. The individual is feeling stress, depression or some sort
of disharmony. The drinks or the drugs ease those unpleasant feelings. The stimulus is the emotion, the reward is the drug. It takes away those bad feelings. Some of
