Dental hygiene is a necessary component of good health. In the homeless environment, however, dental hygiene often falls by the wayside. A necessary focus of the homeless shelter,
therefore, should be to reinstill the importance of good dental hygiene. This can be a somewhat daunting task, however, when the counselor is faced with women and children who
have far more to worry about than fresh breath. These women and children are characterized by a number of behavioral patterns, one of the primary of which is poor
dental hygiene. Each simply lacks the motivation to implement dental hygiene and when they do they often do so in a manner which is insufficient in ensuring good dental
health. Good dental hygiene is a matter of overall health. There are numerous infectious diseases which can be encountered in the field
of dentistry. Cavities are, in fact, treated as an infectious disease (McCarthy, 1996). They are most often caused by the biological organism Streptococcus mutans, a bacteria which secretes
an acid upon exposure to food material (McCarthy, 1996). The acid eats away at the tooth enamel and results in cavities (McCarthy, 1996). Good dental hygiene prevents cavities
as well as even more serious dental complications. The counselor must sometimes employ a variety of motivational methods to accomplish the task of
instilling good dental hygiene in the homeless environment. A component of these methods should emphasize an interventional approach which incorporates personal mastery of dental hygiene, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion
and physiologic feedback. The literature on motivational techniques has considerable value in devising such a methodology. The work of psychologist Albert Bandura is particularly helpful.
