fortunes, but they have enormous influence on the forces of government and society, while the poorest people have little, if any, voice in society as Galbraith in 1992 pointed out
that the "working and non-working poor" tend to have far lower voter turnouts than any other group, which essentially means that the poor tend to turn over the "control of
government to the contented, i.e., the more financially-secure group" (Lin 803). Furthermore, the existence of a viable middle class in American society is diminishing, as families become increasing pressed by
the failing economy. This situation naturally gives rise to series of related questions: What caused the inequalities of wealth that are plaguing society; What are its outcomes; and What
are its possible solutions? The following discussion will explore these questions. The theoretical foundation for this investigation is drawn from the perspective of the Roman Catholic Church. There is
a telling story related by economist Hannah Arendt that concisely conveys the basic philosophy of the Catholic Church in regards to issues of social justice and wealth inequality. Pope John
