greatly expanded. The expansion of the investigation of genetic properties and the results of those investigations has led to other issues which include privacy and confidentiality, the psychological impact of
these discoveries and their use, and the ethical issues now being brought to the forefront. HISTORY OF GENETICS When compared to other sciences, genetics is a fairly young science.
Genetics had its beginning approximately one hundred and fifty years ago, when Mendel, in 1865, discovered and described the laws which govern the transmission of hereditary characteristics (Pelletier and Dorval,
2004). Several milestones should be recognizes in the history of the science of genetics. These milestone include the identification of DNA as the primary structure of genetic information
in 1944 and the explanation of DNAs structure in 1953 (Pelletier and Dorval, 2004). Another milestone occurred eight years later in 1961, when the universal genetic code was discovered
(Pelletier and Dorval, 2004). In the early 1970s, major advances had been made in molecular biology which gave rise to new genetic engineering techniques which included recombinant DNA technology,
genetic mapping and gene sequencing (Pelletier and Dorval, 2004). As a result of these new genetic engineering techniques, the study and use of genetics has continued to expand and
develop. Genomic is the localization and the description of a particular organisms genes (Pelletier and Dorval, 2004). This is the area in which most genetic research has
