of the process. That well known case is generally cited as Brown versus Board of Education. Since Brown, schools have come a long way, but racial issues persist. Sometimes, racial
discrimination comes in the form of language as language is often associated with race. One example comes from Austin where two thousand students were not tested to see if
they needed help with the English language (Humphrey, 2007). This was more than an oversight and some parents were very upset. Humphrey (2007) reports: "Cynthia Valadez, Austin chapter representative of
Mothers Against Discriminatory Racism in Education and Society, is among those who want the district to create an associate superintendent position to deal with "special populations," including English language learners
and special education students" (p.B1). There is a fear that these children are being discriminated against. Racism persists despite the positive effects of Brown. Another problem is social class. In
the United States of America, it appears that the wealthy do have an advantage. They do not send their children to public schools and in the end, they will be
accepted to prestigious universities that are much less accessible to the poor or middle class. This is to some extent tied into racial problems and also relates to democracy. Dewey
(1997) suggests that education be aligned with the idea that there is a class divide. In his book, Democracy and Education, Dewey (1997) presents a chapter entitled The
Democratic Conception in Education, where he explains that if education is seen as something tied to social consciousnesses, then the education received will be tied to the social group (Dewey,
